Adventure at Every Turn
Western Mass is made for road trips, so take a drive through the Mohawk Trail, especially in autumn months, and explore this historic scenic byway that winds and curves along northern Massachusetts via MA2 east to west. The entire trail is 69 miles, but the most rewarding is the 37-mile long stretch between North Adam in the northern Berkshires, and Greenfield. Drive through the rolling hills of the Berkshires and head west, making many stops along the way at various art museums, historic towns, dramatic vistas, all the while crossing five major rivers—the Millers, Connecticut, Green, Deerfield, and Hoosic.
Pop Art to Dr. Seuss
While in Western Mass, check out the world’s largest collection of Norman Rockwell art, as well as pop-icon, Andy Warhol, at the Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge. A tree-lined quadrangle in Springfield is home to four world-class museums that comprise the Springfield Museums. The D'Amour Museum of Fine Arts, the George Walter Vincent Smith Art Museum, the Springfield Science Museum and the Wood Museum of Springfield History are all located on the quadrangle, which is also home to the Dr. Seuss Sculpture Garden, honoring the birthplace of the creator by featuring bronze statues of famed Dr. Seuss's characters.
Wintertime Fun
Grab your skis or your board and head to some of Western Massachusetts’ best mountains for some wintertime fun. Jiminy Peak Ski Resort offers multiple trails for all levels and pretty much every winter activity, snowshoeing and night skiing to coasters. Berkshire East Mountain Resort has 45 trails to crush, as well as great terrain and conditions. Butternut Ski Area in Great Barrington welcomes skiers and boarders of all levels, and even has a 7-lane tubing run.
