The last with the atmosphere of days gone by

posted May 23, 2012

Our obvious choice for Singapore. Friendly staff, good location and quiet environment. Close to the bustling Orchard Road you are able to relax by the pool just enjoying the atmosphere of the colonial style (you do not find many more hotels with 3 storeys only).

Quiet and straightforward

This is an "old" hotel, and not for the pretentious or minimalist types. If you like a quiet, straightforward, non-fancy hotel, this is perfect. I particularly value the "quiet" and this is probably one of the quietest in Singapore. The rooms are simple, but clean and functional. The atmosphere of the hotel is unusual (in that it HAS an atmosphere). The bar is poor, but the prime location of the hotel means there are plenty of choices nearby. But they seem to fail to realise that some people just want a nightcap before bed, or meeting colleagues in the hotel bar (it was actually quite busy). Missed potential. Breakfast pretty weak, but good enough. The Japanese at the front of the hotel is good, although you cannot sign to your room - bring your wallet!

Great stay

Beautiful grand old hotel. Location just off orchard rd is excellent within easy walking distance of orchard rd shopping centers and MRT station. Service and rooms were outstanding and very reasonably priced for its location. Highly recommend and will stay there again

A Peaceful Haven in a Bustling City

We stayed for four nights in this hotel in the newer of the two wings surrounding the smaller swimming pool. The room was typical of any good class hotel room and was comfortable and quiet. We ate twice an the main restaurant (Min Jiang?),sitting outside, and the food and service was excellent. The location of the hotel (and the excellent service at all levels) is the main reason we have been back several times. From the seclusion of the lovely quiet swimming pool it is just a five minute stroll down to Orchard road and the bus and train system ( the three day pass at $20 is great value). The low rise nature of the hotel also appeals While we have stayed at the Goodwood a number of times we hadn't noticed a restaurant right by the grand front entrance called "Gaia". This place is really top class. Impeccable service and beautiful food.

It's more than average but less than very good

When you have the pictures on the website of the hotel in mind get ready for a desillusion. The entrance and look and feel of the hotel is not as charmingly colonial as the website makes you believe. I had a poolside suite and although the location of the suite is nice (direct access to the pool), the word "suite" is a bit too generous for the rather small and outdated room with a small bathroom and a leaking sink. The hotel is worth between 3 and 4 stars but definitely not 5 stars. The gym is old and stuffy. The hotel, the rooms, pool and facilities need an urgent renovation. The staff at the reception are not exceptional but the staff at breakfast and in the bar left a very positive impression as they went out of their way to make life comfortable for the guests. the restaurant, although apparently famous, was a disappointment. If you want to have dinner then go to the Min Jiang at One North. That restaurant (also linked to the hotel but at a different location) was fabulous. In all fairness, after the initial disappointments of the first 2 days I got used to the place and started to enjoy its good location and the small oasis of clam it provides in the big city. I wouldn't go there again though and I left 3 days earlier than planned.
