Great location, comfortable hotel!

posted May 24, 2012

The Carlton Hotel is located in a great position: it is across the road from Chijmes Restaurant Complex and Raffles City, and is close to Marina Bay and a lot of Singapore’s attractions. The hotel has two wings, one old, and one new. I was fortunate enough to be upgraded to the new wing. When I arrived, I couldn’t help but notice a flurry of activity: this is definitely a high traffic hotel, not only with guests but also with business and social functions. I have to admit, check-in was not a great first impression: it seemed to take an awfully long time and the hotel receptionist demonstrated the warmth of a Siberian winter! As I was to stay for 2 weeks and as I was running a training course in one of the hotel’s meeting rooms, it was decided that I should be upgraded. Yippee! For some reason, though, the receptionist did not seem happy about this. She told me that she “had been told” to upgrade me to a “business” floor. I have to admit, even after years of travelling, I still get excited about an upgrade. My excitement, however, didn’t last long. I asked if I got to use the “Business Lounge”, hoping for free evening snacks and drinks, but was given a resounding “No”. So this upgrade was a bit like taking a kid to candy store, but telling him that he wasn’t allowed to eat anything. I suppose I should be grateful for small mercies… yeah, but I wasn’t. My room was very comfortable, although it was difficult to get the air conditioning right – it was either too hot or too cold. The bathroom was large, with a big bath tub and a separate shower. The bed was very comfortable, with a variety of pillows, and the TV was a large flatscreen. The room had free internet, but wasn’t wireless. This would have been annoying if I had only brought my ipad. Wireless, however, was free in public areas, including the pool area. Unfortunately, my room had an adjoining room – I suppose it is for families – which allowed me to hear what was going on next door. Next time I will know to avoid this kind of room. Breakfast is your standard buffet, no better or worse than other hotels. The one thing that bothered me was how much time it took them to clear tables after guests left. Most mornings I was at breakfast around 6.30 am and it was hard to find a “clean” table. Perhaps they don’t have enough staff. The swimming pool, located on the 5th floor, is a nice outdoor area with a bar – although I rarely saw any staff there. The gym is also near the swimming pool in a separate building. It is well equipped, but rarely has staff on duty. From a health and safety issue, this bothers me. A whole bunch of “what if…?” questions seem to surface. Generally, the staff members are friendly and professional – my check-in receptionist must have been having a bad day! The business centre people were very helpful as were the people on the concierge desk. Overall, I enjoyed staying there, and can recommend it.

Perfect location and great price - stay here

Lovely central hotel, right next door to raffles but at a fraction of the price!! $30 from the airport in a taxi We arreived at 7am after anight flight from Perth, we were tired, very tired! Unfortunately there were no rooms for us to check in, until about 9am (still much earlier than the 2pm I had paid for!!). The main lobby has free wifi and sofas - dont try to sleep as you are not allowed!! We were given a free welcome drink and luggae was taken care of. I had requested a twin room, however got a double. I didnt complain as I was so tired. The room had a great view over the Bras Basah Road (main road) but was exceptionally quiet. Air-con worked nicely but not noisy. We used the 5th floor pool which inlucded towels - very refreshing after a day of shopping. Our rate did not include breakfast. The main restuaant had a lovely selction of breakfasts at prices normal for such a hotel - $20 for full buffet The room itself was as expected, clean modern and functional. Dressing gown and slippers as well as shampoo etc Would definately stay here again when I return

The room is almost a five star

the room is awesome! i believed i stayed in the new wing(?), more modern looking. the lobby is very nice too. great location, with 2 MRT stations around, one shopping centre just next to it. i booked it though Agoda quite last minute, and it was a great deal, around $13XX HKD, Carlton Chain, 4 Star, Singapore! bath tub, shower, bath robes (i just love bath robes), free internet, both wi-fi and land line, but seems you have to reactivate every 24 hours(not too sure about it). Breakfast was included, but i couldn't get up before it ended, so didn't know about the breakfast. I probably will stay there again if I visit Singapore next time!

Should have been better...

I stayed here quite frequent, this time around I stayed there in club room on May 16-19, 2012. Hotel location is superb. Front desk, door man staffs are as usual very friendly. However, housekeeping dept need to improve in attitude, called for room make up, but no one came to clean the room after 2 hours. Had to call again, and greeted with uncomfortable tone.

Very good & Average at the same time!

Staying at the Carlton can be a more than average experience, or an average experience - depending on which wing you stay in. They have an old wing, which has Standard & Deluxe rooms & a new wing that is about 2 years old which has Premium rooms. The rooms in the old wing are like any other average 3-4 star hotel room, but the new wing houses rooms that are more like a 5 star hotel room. And there is a difference in cost. Quite a bit. So depending on which wing you stay in, you would end up enjoying a 3-4 star or 5 star experience. Although the Premium Rooms in the new wing are very nice, it still seems too pricey for the hotel overall. It is a decent hotel to stay in, you will have no complaints, but its just odd that you have to pay quite a bit more for a premium room (the sort of room that is standard & cheaper in the 5 star hotel next door). All in all you will not have any complaints about the service, food or location. Its just that when you step into the room you may find it hard to believe that you paid so much for it, whether you take the standard rooms or the premium. The hotel should not charge so much for their rooms its overpriced.
