Chic, Sophisticated, Quiet & In The Middle Of It All

posted May 22, 2012

If sophistication and style are what you look for in a hotel, the St. George is a great place to stay. The rooms are modern, clean, and the beds very comfortable. Windows open for fresh air and there is AC for summer heat too. The bathroom is small but very bright and nicely appointed with both shower and bath. The location - just a few blocks from Campo di Fiori - is the perfect place to stay if you like to walk. You can walk to the Vatican, to the Spanish Steps, along the Tiber, etc. There is a grocery market down the street and around the corner to grab stuff for the room too, very convenient. Friendly staff who speak English and French as well as Italian helped us arrange a car to the airport and effortlessly took care of us the entire stay were much appreciated. The St. George is the perfect hotel in the perfect neighborhood in Rome!

Very suitable hotel for wheelchair users staying in historical central Rome

posted May 14, 2012

The St George is a very comfortable relaxed hotel. The contemporary, elegant, décor is punctuated with traditional features from the original building. The staff are pleasant and most helpful. Reception staff go out of their way to provide good service. The breakfast buffet is sufficient and of a good standard, although it could be improved by maintaining the heat of the cooked foods. We chose to use the hotel restaurant for an evening meal on my (significant) birthday. What a good decision – I will post an additional review on the restaurant page. As a wheelchair user I am going to concentrate particularly on disabled friendly aspects of the hotel in this review. I was very pleased to find such an accessible hotel in central Rome, having searched also around a good many others in the centre. Mainly, hotels either have a bathroom with a shower inside a bath, rather than a walk-in shower or they do not have an elevator large enough for a wheelchair. The St George has two (only just) adequate sized elevators from Reception, with a swipe card entry system for the room. One of the elevators travels down to the spa and gym at basement level. It also goes up to the roof terrace on the 6th floor. There is a public toilet on the spa level (not wheelchair accessible). This facility also functions as the restaurant toilet. We would have loved to have spent some time on the (fully accessible) roof terrace, as the weather was good for most of the time – it was such a pity that the hotel had not yet opened the terrace for the summer. Access to the main entrance is nearly level from the drop off point outside – with just one small step (about 2 cms). All public areas have level access. We had a deluxe room on the 4th floor which, at 25 sq metres was large enough for manoevring around in a wheelchair. The view from the window was simply the wall across the street. The bathroom was only just large enough for wheelchair access. As it is not a dedicated ‘disabled’ room it would not be practical for a wheelchair user who needs to transfer to the side of the toilet from the wheelchair. The sink was wall hanging which was very practical for use from a wheelchair. Mirror above sink is visible from wheelchair height, magnifying make-up mirror can only be used at standing height. Hairdryer usable at sitting height. The bathroom floor is non-slip travertine. There was plenty hot water with a reasonable flow in the shower. The shower area was a good size containing an overhead rain shower with an additional hand held spray. There was a very low lip to step over at the base (

Beautiful Hotel with a great location but.....

This was a very beautiful and clean hotel. Location was terrific for getting to the vatican, the tiber river, and all the major sites in the city. I just felt like the front desk staff were too snooty. The bed was so hard I didn't sleep the first 2 nights, the third night they did put egg crate or something on the bed to soften it. The buffet breakfast was good, but after being at Waldorf Astoria in Rome, I found it just OK. No prossciuttos or great cheese selections. Staff in the restaurant wasn't very attentive either. All 3 mornings had to go out of my way to get a second cappuccino. For the price, I expected more. And having to put the card key in the wall by the door so I could get and keep the lights on was ridiculous. I aslo could not get the towel warmer in the bathroom to work. I had trouble with the TV, no sound and screen green. A maintenance man came up and fixed. I also had problems with the lights not working in the room. The front desk kept telling me to put the card key in the wall, and wouldn't listen when I told them it was in the wall and still the lights not working. When maintenance came up to fix, my lights had tripped a breaker or something. I did not go to the spa at all as I was there to tour and see the city. Also, I set air conditioner at night to coldest setting and room never got below 72F

Charming hotel

Staff were helpful and attentive. Hotel ambience was calm and restful. Bedrooms were spotless, shower room well stocked. Position was excellent to access many of the main tourist cites. We also experienced no noise, we were in a deluxe twin. No view from the window.

An excellent hotel well positioned for the main attractions of Rome

We stayed for 3 nights at the end of April and were very impressed overall. A couple of minor niggles were that the room was a bit small and the hot elements of the breakfast were always very cool. Staff were excellent and very helpful and the only part of the Hotel we didn't see was the roof terrace which was closed presumably as it was off season. It is not cheap but definitely value for money.
