Outside of center but within the reach

posted April 14, 2012

Antares Hotel Accademia is, what is declared as, 4 stars hotel located on the north–west of Milan outside of the central circle. It is located right by the main road that, in case of your room's windows facing it, might be a problem – cars are passing by all night long sometimes with police sirens and horns. We had our windows right above the hotel's entrance facing the road and the first night with our 3 years old child was quite a challenge. Due to the passing cars we could not open the windows to get some air. The air conditioning in the hotel was turned off due to +18 outside. Though it seemed to be turned on for our room on the next nights. Not sure whether it was just for us or for the whole hotel though. There is a very conveniently located shopping mall right across the road from the hotel with clothes, shoes, pharmacy and grocery store. The tram stop to city center is right in front of the hotel and it takes about 30-40 minutes to get to the main square. The best way of getting there, as we have discovered, was to use tram #19 from the hotel to Conciliazione stop and then, if it's not close enough for you, use subway M1 line to Duomo. Tickets for the public transportation could be bought right at the hotels reception. One ticket let's you switch between tram, buss and subway without additional tickets within the declared time. Unfortunately, the reception sells tickets for only 1.5h (1.5€ each) that is not very convenient for tourists. Better cross the road and buy a 24h ticket for 4.5€ in Tobaco store if you plan to use public transportation more than just a round-trip. There is also a free mini-bus shuttle from the hotel to the closest subway station QT8 (and the return way) running once an hour but you should book it upfront. We used it only once to get to the subway when we were leaving. We found trams much more charming than shuttle + subway. If you want to use taxi, we have payed 15€ to get to the hotel from the Central Station. The room has been cleaned regularly and thoroughly. Though, when we had forgot to leave tips on the bed the other day, we have been left without toilet paper. Could be a coincidence, but never happened when the tips were in place. WiFi in the hotel, at least that is how the hotel calls it, was a joke. Once again, we were right above the entrance to the hotel that should, supposedly, be the best spot for the signal. But connection was so bad that I had to go down to lobby for a couple of times in order to simply get my email. And even there the connection was not very good. This was incredibly annoying especially since they declare the whole hotel to be covered by the network. On my iPad I barely got one bar if connection was available at all. Staff said the speed depends on the number of users connected to the network, but either somebody was regularly watching porn on the network or the network is in a huge need for more access points across the hotel to improve the signal. Staff was welcoming and usually helpful. Breakfasts had everything we needed except proper juices. Though some might find the selection limited. All in all, we would not stay in this hotel again without the same great deal we had from booking.com this time. Mainly because of a distance from the center. But keep in mind that if you do get a good deal from the hotel (we had very cheap early-booking pre-payed special deal), they will refuse to register your stay to any frequent-flyer program unless you pay full-price for your room. This was kind of unexpected and weird.

Great Surprise......Excellnt Hotel

The hotel was excellent. We travelled in January 2012 and had everything that we needed. The neighbohood also has some great restaurants and a large shopping centre. We travelled by car and everywhere is only a 15 minute drive away including the city centre and the stadium (only 10 minutes). The hotel rooms were very clean and the service offered, especially by reception staff, was 10/10. Maybe could include some items in breakfast but I would eagerly return to this hotel. My compliments go to all the staff members !! Thanks !

Jewel of an hotel, set in a gritty sea

This hotel serves the nearby conference centre and has been expensively furnished to an outstanding standard, if somewhat Middle Eastern for European tastes, perhaps. Nevertheless, the accommodation cannot be faulted, apart from the brick hard pillows. Our room (305) had a sitting room and all accessories for a comfortable stay, some of them very thoughtful indeed. Cleanliness throughout was superb and valet parking is provided free. Visitors should consider hiring a car, as an alternative to a costly taxi ride from Malpensa, as the hotel is simple to reach and a Lakes visit is made possible as a result, therefore. The staff were friendly with no hustle, the breakfast plentiful and the small restaurant surprisingly good. Although the hotel is set in a grimy suburb of Milan (itself a graffiti-covered disgrace), the 20 minute, frequent tram service to the centre starts conveniently outside the Accademia's door. All in all, excellent value and immaculately managed. Pity about the unclassy neighbourhood and its resident, but unthreatening, chavs though, who caterwaul into the night.

Clean hotel in the Nothern suburbs

The Antares Accademia Hotel lies not far from the fair grounds and near to the “tagenziale” ring road. The hotel has about 60 guest rooms. Our double room was new and clean. The location has not much to offer; not even any decent restaurant nearby; except a big shopping mall is located a couple of hundred meters from the hotel. The tramway #14 passing in front of the hotel runs to the center of town. The breakfast was very basic, but genrally in Italy breakfast are dull and this is no exception at the Antares. The “free internet” never worked. The staff at the reception was not bothered about our complaint. Public parking in a side alley was possible. Hotel parking is prohibitively charged at € 20.- / night.
