Olde worlde, but good

posted May 17, 2012

I use this a lot for business, room can vary considerably - the very best (on the ground floor) are really quite regal, but even the ordinary rooms are just fine. It's all a bit olde worlde for me and slightly faded glory, but it's clean, tidy set in great grounds and the staff are good. I would personally say this is a good hotel for business or pleasure.

excellent

A bit of a let down

posted April 27, 2012

My partner and I stayed here hoping for a bit of luxury before visiting Thorpe Park the following day. We were impressed by the overall look of the hotel and grounds and the room was nicely decorated and clean. It was a Saturday and there was a wedding taking place which didn't bother us as we went out for the evening. On our return we decided to have a drink from the hotel bar before going to bed but it took a while to get served as the bar was unmanned. We stayed in room 1015 which was a room facing the car park. We went to bed around 22:00, hoping to get an early night before our day out. However we couldn't sleep for the following reasons: 1.The bed was really uncomfortable- it was too soft and we found ourselves rolling into the middle of it. 2. The room was hot and stuffy. 3. It was really noisey - we could hear everything; the room upstairs' creaky floorboards, other rooms' televisions (on full blast), people talking loudly in the corridor. We didn't get to sleep until 3:30am! We would not stay here again - the lack of sleep ruined our stay and we feel it was not value for money.

Wonderful - we could have been staying in deepest Dorset !

We stayed here for 2 nights and enjoyed the experience immensely. We had one of the suites overlooking the beautiful grounds, and it could not have been nicer. The huge bedroom had all the trimmings you could want - apart from an empty room-fridge, though at least switched on so we could smuggle in a bottle of champagne without paying hotel prices - a large TV, a extremely comfortable King sized bed, a sofa and desk to work at and to make tea at …. though I didn't appreciate the tiny cups and would much have preferred the option of mugs! Being an Apple person I was also a little disappointed in the Broadband option in the rooms as I had to wander downstairs every time I wanted to use my laptop … but OK, us Apple fanatics have to suffer for our passion! Next door was a massive. light and airy separate bathroom - with a proper bath…hurrah! I love baths…with a goodly tray of freebies! Towels were plentiful and hotel-fluffy. There was also a huge lobby area where we were able to store luggage etc, but which added to the general impression of the size of our suite. A beautiful lounge area downstairs, serves, as most hotels do these days, an overpriced posh tea on weekend afternoon, is full of squashy sofas and chairs, is light and buzzing (I like that in a hotel) with both guests and staff. A great place for people watching whilst tapping away on a laptop on the free Wifi. The grounds are the piece the residence of the whole place. They are wonderful, with a broad sweep of lawns down to Broadwater Lake. You could think you are in deepest Dorset, rather than 15 or so miles to Heathrow. Really great. There is one but though. We had a look in the restaurant. I was interested to read the report of a couple of fellow contributor who said the Sunday lunch was awful … I am afraid I can well believe it, as what I saw under the hot arc lights of the buffet on Saturday looked truly appalling. Dried up joints of meat, and vegetables swimming in water. I cannot understand any hotel of this quality serving this … don't blame me for writing this without actually trying the food … I wouldn't have done so for all the tea in China. The problem was … we were actually looking forward to a nice relaxing Sunday lunch here. I'm afraid we changed our plans. But overall, the 2 days we spent here we delightful and as I have now moved away from Surrey for a couple of years, look forward to returning here when in the area.

Staff superb !!!! :-)

Have been at Oatlands for 7 months on and off and have found the whole stay overall excellent. The staff there both front of house and behind scenes continue to do a great job. Front desk staff after a days work welcome with a smile, hello by name and also your key. It is set in lovely grounds easily accessing local restaurants and bars. Rooms large with air conditioning and with both bath and shower to use. Will go back but hopefully not working so can enjoy further. Overall big big thankyou from myself for looking after myself and my team !!!!!!!!
