Great location, you get what you pay for

Just returned from a week stay in Berlin at this hotel & agree it is not high class but the rooms are clean, towels changed and maid calls each day. For the price could not really complain. Yes the passageways are tired looking, the entrance to the hotel is not impressive but this is not a 4 or 5 star hotel. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to stay in the centre of Berlin, wants easy access to underground and has a limited budget. The one bedroom rooms are on the 5th floor and close to the restaurant where breakfast is served. We upgraded to the comfort rooms on the 2nd floor, as the first room we were given smelled of smoke. There are signs saying no smoking but obviously some choose to ignore them. The reception staff apologised and quickly found us another room. The beds are not very comfortable but standard basic hotel quality. From the airport take the airport express train to zoo gardens. Once you are outside the station look for the mercedes sign on the building roof & walk in that direction. The hotel is next door to the Saturn building. This is our 3rd trip to Berlin having stayed at Suite hotels before. We would return to Berliner Hof if we were to holiday there again, based on location and cost. The money we saved versus Suite hotels was our spending money for the week.

Good location, vary basic hotel, poor beds and facilities

The hotel location is excellent for West Berlin. Transport links are good for the rail and underground links and the journey from Schonefeld by rail is around 1 hour with a few changes. The local area is excellent for shops, food and bars and the live music in the Irish Bar in the Europa Center is refreshingly close. The hotel is very basic. It has essentially had a lick of cheap paint in an attempt to make it less dull and dreary and this just left it looking somewhat pitiful. It is similar to sleeping in an old office building. The reception staff are efficient but nothing more. In no way is this a friendly place. The internet system is a ticket one where you purchase an hour or two and use that until it runs down after numerous uses. It is not cheap mind at 3 Euro for 2 hrs, 5 for 3 (makes no sense as that is actually more per hour) and 7.5 Euro for 5 hours. The connection is slow but stable. The rooms are tired and basic. They were though quiet although this may be because other people stayed somewhere better. No pictures on the walls just blank green/grey walls and a big uncomfortable bed which had two single mattresses which is terrible but made worse by the mattresses being evidently made of concrete. The duvets they provide are a joke as they simply provide two thin ones per bed; the cheapest that they could possibly have bought. The hallways of the place reminded me of a battleship in the uniform grey dullness. If I had been told i was staying in 1980's East Berlin I could have believed it. All in all a quite uncomfortable, cheap and tired experience which I would not repeat.

Berliner Hof

We were very dissapointed with this hotel. They made a huge argument with us leaving the hotel. We had to buy new make-up for our daughter, as the hotel staff accidently dropped the make-up bag into the toilet. No note! We found the bag soaked in water returning from our daytrip in Berlin. The hotel would not refund the make-up, but after a big diskussion the manager agreed to cover the loss. He sent us to KaDeWe to buy new maku up for her, but returning to the hotel after 2 hours looking for the things to be replayced, they would not pay the amount to us. We had a huge argument, and leaving the hotel the staff "forgot" to give us our passports!! We did not notice, as we were very upset and we were driving by car, not by plane - so the passports were fortunately not needed right away. 5 months later we needed the passports and they were not in our home. We were shocked to find out that the hotel had kept them for 5 months without any notice!! We wrote them by mail 3 times, but no response!! Finally I wrote them as if I wanted to book a room, and the responded within 2 minutes!!!! Having them in speach they wanted to know if we were the ones with the make-up bag!! Oh, yes they had right at this moment found our passports. I wrote the danish embassy in Berlin also, and they also contacted the hotel. We had to pay for the delivery + 10 Euros for the service!!!! WE WILL NEVER RETURN TO THIS HOTEL AGAIN!!!!!

After the initial chock of the poor quality of the room, I warmed up to the hotel. I had expected better quality but I guess in relation to the price it’s what you get. I had booked a single studio room, none smoking. The room was on the fifth floor and had a nice view. I'm pretty sure there had been smoking in the room before and as other hotels in Berlin, they try to hide it with some horrible sweet smelly spray. You can smell this throughout the hotel corridors and rooms. Part from the smell, the room was ok but don’t expect anything more than ok. It was clean except for the shower curtain which could use a wash. As reading other reviews about unfriendly staff I didn’t notice this but I didn’t have much interaction with them. I didn’t order the breakfast, I found the price too high and I had a quick look in the breakfast area and it didn’t look like it's worth it. I agree with previous reviews about a s a lovely bakery just down the street and you always have KadeWe which is good for food. The location of the hotel is great. You are close to u-bahn and s-bahn.

Pedantic and illogical staff ruined our trip

All ok except I booked a family room, but because I ACCIDENTALLY also clicked on 2 people instead of 3 on the booking website, I was given a double room with an extra cot bed at an extra charge of 35 Euro a night! The receptionist (Julian) only had to focus on one part of the booking to find an excuse to make my booking difficult. He COULD have paid attention to the part where i said "Family Room" but instead he ONLY acknowledged the number of people! I had also had an extensive email conversation prior to my booking with one of the reservation team who recommended I book a family room for 3 adults. Despite evidence of this Julian just smirked at me and charged me the money for the extra bed in a double room. Totally unfair and just pedantic. Despite the hotel being reasonably priced in a central location, I would NOT recommend the Berliner Hof based on this ridiculous and illogical treatment.
