beach front

stayed in rio othon palace for 3 nights. had an amazing time.the hotel is very convenient to all the other sights.as well as to the copacabana beach.as it just outside the hotel. while staying there there is a night market on going.which a plus for all the toursit. the rooms are in decent size as weel as the toilet and bath. i stayed in the 16th floor facing the beach so i had a fantastic view every time i woke up. the breakfast are with plenty of choices.

Disappointed

Well after much research and looking through all the reports on this hotel I decided that all the hotels in Copacabanna seemed to have good and bad remarks , so I decided to take a chance on the Rio Othon Palace purely for its location. I was extremely pleased with the location as the front ocean view De Luxe Room does have an amazing view of the beach and the hotel is placed right in the middle of Copacabanna and Ipanena so top marks for location, also one street behind the Hotel had all the buses you need to get around the area and beyond, and was ideal for shopping also, so again great location. The hotel on the other hand was another matter, The bedroom was quite large actually and although did have a slight odour on some days, it was very clean and aceptable. I would advise anyone to get a refurbished room on a high floor, as some lower floors have not been refurbished so are quite miserable. The hotel had lots of security, and reception staff, BUT we stayed for over 8 days and in all that time not one member of staff said hello to us, or even asked if we were enjoying our stay !!!!!!!!! We never felt welcomed at anytime , which I feel let this hotel down badly. The breakfast room was extremely basic and not somewhere that you would enjoy breakfast, you felt the need to get in an out as quickly as you could.breakfast was good if you like fruit, cereal, cheese and Brazilian sausage Chopped into squares and warm scrambled egg!!!!!! Bacon came once in all the time we stayed so we found breakfast very poor, with also bad coffee and only warm water for tea. The pool on the top floor of the hotel was good by Rio standards, only small but ok and clean, although it would be nice if pool staff said hello or at a push SMILED,!!!!!!!!!! Do not use the hotel taxis they are more expensive, go to the side street and hail a taxi it's much cheaper and just as safe. Do not take the tours the prices are outrageous and all the sites are literally on the door step so take a taxi or get the bus, it's so much better and cheaper and you do it all at your own pace. Now I was scared witless from all the horror stories about Rio, the muggings, the shootings, the stabbings,, well I can tell you that at no time did I ever feel threatened or scared to go out, or leave the Copacabanna area,YES BE CAREFUL ,DON'T LEAVE VALUABLES ABOUT ON THE BEACH! DO NOT FLAUNT YOUR WEALTH, but would you do any of those things anywhere else in any country in the world, I suppose not so don't do it in Rio and you will be fine. For free Internet go to the bars on the beach it's all free, so why pay hotel prices. To sum up !!! Rio is lovely, the Christ statue is awesome, sugar loaf mountain will take your breath away, but if you want night life, samba music, late bars then take a trip to Lappa as this is the only place you will find this kind of thing. Rio Othon Palace you need to get your staff to welcome guests with smiles as you will not get me returning to you on my next trip, I intend to go to a hotel that makes its guests feel they are part of the Hotel. I did tell the management my feelings on departure but they did not seem concerned, and I also notice from other trip advisor reviews that the manager from this hotel only seems to express an email to you in responses to good remarks about the Hotel, so that says it all to me.

Unjustified

Location Location Location. Thats all this hotel has to offer. And to justify the location, the hotel allows itself to : 1. Charge a ridiculous sum, charge 15$ a day for a 50% operational SLOW internet connectivity (the remaining 50% it just doesnt work). 2. Perform water maintenance without notifying anybody, so when you brush your teeth in the morning, expect to rinse with brown water. 3. Do not offer taxi services 4. Even a small pen next to the telephone would be nice, but still none. 5. Charge over 280 Dollars per night. So sorry Othon, although the front desk personnel was very kind and professional, and accepted my refusal to pay for the internet connection, still, I dont think I will ever return to this hotel nor I can recommend it to anyone. Which by the way brings me to another question. How come it is so highly rated in TripAdvisor.... Does it mean that the info in the website is loosing its credibility?

Great location, ok service, bad room // Bien localizado, servicio ok, pésimo cuarto

The hotel is well located opposite the Copacabana beach, and is probably one of the best hotels in the area, but that's not saying much ... Persons attending the reception are somewhat unfriendly, the concierge provides information only things offered by the hotel at twice the price you would get on the street and you have to insist to get information on buses and subways ... The room is small but the beds are the worst ... I understand that the building is old, but the beds have to be renewed because they are hard, small and uncomfortable. And don't believe them when they say Superior Ocean View because the view is sideways. The Internet costs 30 reais per day and the gym 20 reais at a time, which surprises me in a hotel that is now charging $ 250 per night at least ... Breakfast is good and the hotel is very well located ... but there are other cheaper options around Copacabana.

Great location, wonderful view

Even though Ipanema and Leblon became pretty trendy for new fashionable hotels (I am talking to you, Fasano), Copacabana still provides the best views - to the fantastic beach promenade, the Pao de Azucar. And location plus safetly are still an important issue in La Marvalhosa, as Rio is also called. The Rio Orthon Palace was built in the 70s and still holds a nice spot, 30 floors high. Even though some reviews stated that not all rooms have been refurbished, we got lucky as we were upgraded in a Business room on the 22nd floor with a breathtaking, excellent view. Waking up, going to bed - it was the best view I have ever enjoyed in Rio. Plus: the room was refurbished and nice/ clean. I also enjoyed the breakfast in the 30th floor. The only little downside was the slow internet connection. For 30 Reais a day it should at least provide some speed - which it didn't, and that's a shame as from my point of view, internet connection shoul not only be included in Business room fees, but also pretty fast. Besides that my time in the Rio Orthon palace was great.
